Counting Contrails

Do I like to travel? I LOVE to travel.

Why? I spent my first Christmas flying to Australia. And so it begun, a childhood chock full of exotic layovers (Ever been to Tashkent? In the 1970’s?). I was hooked.

One of my habits? Constantly perusing the Web for our next goto destination. Thank you, Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

Those who have no desire to discover new places, learn new cultures, eat different food? I DON’T GET YOU.

Invest in house improvements or travel? That’s easy.

My Christmas wish? To remove from our lives those things which sit in boxes or hang in closets and never see the light of day. We keep them as reminders. But why? The best mementos are those that creep into our head as we are doing the most mundane of things…they are the best at making us smile, cringe, and even tear up. No storage required.

My if-I-could-have-anything dream? To one day literally claim where my suitcase is open, that’s home. To live as this couple does. Ken is slowly coming around. I think.

Pura Vida

You know, when do you’re doing the most boring, mundane things, that’s when ideas start to ramble. That happened the other morning as I was pulling the delicates out of the washer.

I think constantly about how I should share more on this blog. What better way to find new friends than to share about things that I like or love. My favorite things. I mean, so very many of us like to write about things that we hate, or ‘cilantro’ as Andra would say.

What are some of your favorite things?

I like waking up early.

Now, I’m not talking about the get-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-to-pee-and-not-going-back-to-sleep kind of waking up.

I mean, waking just before dawn. When things are still, as if nothing has happened yet.

It’s not a matter of self-discipline or an attempt to be better than anyone else. Rather, the introvert in me likes the alone time while the sun rises. I need it, to compose my thoughts and my day.

No wonder early morning software release deployments don’t annoy me. I say, “Let’s get up, brew some joe, and get this thing live!”

Late night? I zone out. I want to lose myself in a mind-numbing television sitcom or non-critical read and, of course, sleep. I never pulled an All-Nighter in college. Recalling my first career, hotel management, I sometimes had to cover the front desk during the dreaded night audit shift. 11:00 pm to 7:00 am. Yuck. I fought to stay awake past midnight, let alone balance the previous day’s books.

Our dogs also like the early morning. We walk our neighborhood before dawn. In their canine way, they ensure all is in-check, that everything smells the same, they take inventory of all squirrels, and ensure no new cats have moved in overnight.

Me? I relish the quiet, the sometimes fog (and foghorns), the end of dark, and the burgeoning light.

A word from Dog

Hi. Jasmine here.

I thought I’d pick up where Carol left off since she’s been quite the slacker the past few days…well, really, the past week or so. You humans and your habits. Hard to break bad ones, hard to keep good ones. Us dogs? Not an issue. For us, there’s no right or wrong. Instead, its a cinch. You guys tell us what’s right and what’s wrong. And, we get treats when we get it right! We understand you. Well, we understand what we want to hear. It’s not all this, like you think.

Now, about Kona…that little b—-h and her fancy bowl. Enough already. She gets her own special dining room, too. And then she has the gall to growl at me from within her abode when she’s done eating. B—-h. And a whole post about it? Really?

She’d better be glad she’s here because it was gonna be just me. I picked out the boy first. And then Ken picked out Kona. And then Carol decided she would come home with us.

That’s okay. Because I’m the top dog, the Getter of All Things. Need a dish towel? Got it. Looking for a shoe? No problem. A sock? Absolutely. I even clean up after Kona when she’s decided to bring dinner back up for a second round (I’ll keep it at that since you humans don’t appreciate canine gourmet).

Anyway, just wanted to chime in about me. What you see is what you get. No shame. Now, if I could just get my humans to let me sleep in the bed with them. And, I don’t understand this waiting-until-it’s-light-to-get-up-and-eat-breakfast thing.

Pesky Habit

Habits. They follow us everywhere, every day. We begin each new year vowing to change them.

I’ve been thinking more about my habits. Of course, the bad ones, like repeatedly falling weakly to the “all u can eat” M&M dispenser on my co-team member’s desk. It’s strategically placed right in my path to-and-from the restroom.  And, let’s not forget the big bowl of assorted chocolates in the office that someone or something mysteriously recently kept re-filling overnight. Temptation is everywhere.

Then, there are those good habits we adopt such as taking the time to exercise DURING the workday. Luckily, I am a part of a company that encourages good habits. Adopting a new, good habit is easy except for when you want to replace it for an old, bad habit.

As a Product Owner, I constantly think how users will interact with the software we design: How does it impact their routines, is it intuitive, and does it encourage them to change poorly-practiced habits?

Which brings me to The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. Before now, I never really thought about habits and how they form. Apparently, without any input from us, the brain will try to make habits out of every routine, to save energy and enable us to devote our noggins to more critical tasks such as devising the next hot start up concept. Training your brain to change a habit is the challenge.
